Well I guess I am going to try this blogging thing again. I’ve tried more than once before and I usually start with one post and never finish. We’ve been getting loads of snow around here this past week. Probably the most that I have seen in a few years. Here is one quick picture of the snow. That’s our garlic patch under there. I’m pretty excited about taking the garlic to the local farmer’s markets this spring. After the garlic we are going to attempt sweet potatoes and we are pretty excited to try something new. We are still fairly new to farming for ourselves, but I guess I should start at the beginning of our story. I myself grew up on a dairy farm and have loved farming since I could really walk. Most of my favorite memories as a child revolve around the dairy, so it was a tough decision for me to leave the farm. I did however get an Elementary education degree and begin teaching at a local school. I continued to help my Dad until I had kids, but my heart has never truly left farming. My husband grew up with a few beef cattle and some chickens. He has also always had a love for all things agriculture. When we got married he was working for a city waste/ water treatment plant. In about our second year of marriage we decided that we wanted to try some type of farming. After some discussion we ended up getting a loan and buying a Massey Ferguson combine. Without going into all the details my hubby now has a pretty good deer corn business and has already upgraded his combine. About a year ago, we worked things out so that he could quit his job and farm full time. Part of it was to help take care of our three boys, but it has worked well. So far things are going pretty good. He helps another farmer and he farms his few acres. We are working on expanding but it’s definitely going to take some time. I know I went through our story pretty fast but hopefully in the next few blog posts I can cover some more!
